Project Guide for Interior Remodel Projects

Remodel Project

This guide is provided by The City of Denver and is intended to provide you an overview of the requirements for interior remodel projects involving structural changes inside your home. For information on specific types of interior remodels, visit the project guides for attic conversions, basement finishes, bathroom remodels and kitchen remodels.

No permit is required for simple projects that only replace (like-for-like) existing:

  • Cabinets
  • Countertops
  • Tiling
  • Flooring in the same configuration
  • Like-for-like electrical, plumbing or ventilation fixtures
  • No permit is required for tearing down, replacing or repairing drywall, if limited to less than one 4-foot by 8-foot sheet

Permits are required when your project includes the following:

  • Additions
  • Basement finishes
  • Alteration to the existing floor plan
  • Structural changes, such as adding or removing exterior doors or windows
  • Extensive kitchens and bathroom remodels
  • New or rerouted ductwork
  • New or relocated electrical or plumbing fixtures
  • Decks, Patios, Gazebos, shade structures, pools, garden sheds, hot tubs

Once you receive your permit, place it in a window or other visible location that can be seen by your inspectors.  Building permits are required by law, and they also provide third-party verification that you (or the contractor you hired) met the minimum code requirements for your project.

Building permit applications, plan reviews requirements, permit fees and building guidelines can be found online. For example, the Town of Parker is www.ParkerOnline.org/Building
