The main difference between an interior designer and an architect lies in their education and training. An architect is trained in creating a structural building that meets national, state and local building codes.
An interior designer is trained in creating a functional and quality interior environment. Architects are more focused on the technical requirements, interior designers on the human psychology and emotional aspects of spaces.
An architect has the ability to build from the ground up, creating new structures. They are knowledgeable about the mechanics of finishes and materials, the how and why things structurally work the way they do, and the surrounding environment’s relationship to their creation. Architects work closely with their clients to make sure that projected designs match their needs and are functional, safe and economical.
They often control a project from start to finish and work with a number of construction professionals, including surveyors and engineers, producing drawings and specifications that the construction team works from. They are not trained and customarily not interested in the finishing of space; that is the area that the designer handles.
Interior designers deal with form and function, space and aesthetics. They are professionally trained to create pleasing environments through interior space manipulation and planning. Qualified through education and experience, an interior designer can identify, research, and creatively resolve design issues. They can reconfigure interior space to make it workable, meeting the specific needs and wants of the client.
They can also provide various services including developing documents and specifications relative to interior spaces in compliance with applicable building and safety codes, creating illustrations and renderings and selecting and specifying furnishes, fixtures, products, materials and colors. In addition, interior designers also design lighting and its specification (cove lighting, downlights, etc.) monitor and manage the construction and the installation of the design.
